My Passport Hard Drive has not Got Recognized Anymore!

I have an external 500 GB WD Hard drive and it was working fine but suddenly my passport hard drive has not got recognized instead it was recognized as a local disk by the computer. At times computer asks me to format it in order to make it back to its previous state, but I didn't do that because I knew it will wash out all of my data. So what should I do then? Kindly help me?

1. First of all you should not format the drive at any cost if you are having a valuable data in it. By doing so, you will lose all of your data.
2. Secondly back up your drive's data somewhere else and then connect it to the computer again.
3. After connecting it, right-click on it and select Tools and then, click on Check for errors and finally select the Auto fix errors option. Your computer will perform its function and in case if there are errors it will automatically fix them up but if the problem remains there, then FORMAT your hard drive. Although it is suggested to seek an advice of a passport hard drive recovery expert but in case you're doing it yourself then do remember, you have to make a backup of your data first. Otherwise you will lose it forever.
